Lymphatic Drainage – How does it work?

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage is an ancient practice. It is a type of massage or cupping that encourages the natural drainage of the lymph through the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a system of vessels that removes excess toxins, fluids, and bacteria out of the skin and into the liver and kidneys to be processed, helping the skin naturally purify. When operating well, we feel healthier, lighter on our feet, and have clearer skin. This type of massage is experiencing a major revival because it brightens the skin, de-puffs the face and body, and boosts immunity.

During a lymphatic drainage massage, the therapist will use specific techniques to move lymph fluid from the tissues to the lymph nodes, reducing swelling in the tissue. This reduces the sensation of puffiness. The actual practice of lymphatic drainage can be done by yourself, at home by placing your hands flat on the sides of your neck just below the ears, and gently stretch the skin back. Repeating this motion 10 to 15 times a day can improve the appearance of your skin and overall health.

While lymphatic drainage can be beneficial, it’s important to recognize that the lymphatic system is susceptible to change due to external factors such as UV radiation, aging, and inflammation. Unfortunately, lymphatic drainage doesn’t stop these factors from affecting the appearance of our skin. If you’re feeling puffy or fatigued, lymphatic drainage can help alleviate those symptoms for a brief period of time. It can improve confidence drastically when we’re not feeling great about our skin’s appearance.
