This is an ancient Chinese remedy using herbs, specifically, dried mugwart or moxa, to place on the skin for a variety of treatments. The herbs are rolled & then burned to release healing properties. Mugwort herbs are small and spongy and are believed to aid healing during acupuncture.
How it works
A moxibustion therapist burns the mugwort leaves close to the skin’s surface, using a stick to apply heat. The moxa cone rests on the skin, and the therapist ignites one end of the cone, leaving it to burn slowly. Once the patient begins to feel heat and the skin turns red, the therapist removes the cone from the skin. When used during acupuncture, the therapist places the moxa on the acupuncture needle and ignites it. The heat is transferred from the cone, to the needle, to the acupuncture point.
Why Moxibustion?
The heat generated during this practice can help increase energy flow throughout the body. This energy flow is believed to treat:
- Headaches
- Arthritis
- Back pain
- Fatigue
- Menstrual cramps
- Migraines
Studies show that moxibustion can help improve symptoms of liver disease, ulcerative colitis, and hot flashes.
Risks
While moxibustion has benefits, the risks include burns, nausea, coughing and dark skin patches. Moxibustion can aid in healing and restorative processes.
